Gormley’s Bodies At Rest series is comprised from carefully arranged chrome balls, representing a sleeping human form.

In this series Gormley also explores the varied states of human unconsciousness, from dreams to wakefulness – even death. This sculpture, for example, is reminiscent of the crouching figures of Pompeii, the steel balls representing the inescapable coating of dust that smothered an entire city. This outer shell therefore conveys Gormley’s common theme of a contained human spirit or emotions, highlighted by the impenetrable materials surrounding it.
